At the Chief Executive's Question and Answer Session on 11 April 2018, I asked the Chief Executive over the issue of public toilets and asked the Government to launch the "Public Toilet Revolution"; gaining resonance from the tourism industry, the public, the media and even senior officials of the former government. Many expressed their concern through different channels. Following that occasion, I earned positive responses from Professor Sophia Chan, Secretary for Food and Health, and Mr. Philip Yung, Permanent Secretary, after making appointments with them respectively to reflect the relevant issues. A pledge was made to implement short, medium and long term concrete measures to gradually improve the issue of public toilets in Hong Kong, especially those in tourist areas. Meanwhile, we must also improve the outsourcing arrangement, so as to safeguard Hong Kong's reputation as Asia’s World City.
Regarding the main public toilets of concerns, they included the ones at the Old Central Market, Tung Lung Chau, the Peak, and Tak Wah Park in Tsuen Wan, etc., the sanitary conditions have improved to a certain extent, and some began to be refurbished. The Tourism Commission has also proposed a list of 23 public toilets in the tourist areas that need to be improved. I shall continue to monitor the follow-up works done by the Government.
