Requested Help for Hotels and Guesthouses

The local hotel and guesthouse industry has suffered tremendously from the social riots and the epidemic. While the occupancy rate has fallen sharply, the Government's support measures for the industry are obviously insufficient. Therefore, I have all along been listening to the demands of the industry, reported the distress of our members to the public, and cooperated with other members of the industry in giving a number of suggestions to the Government.

6 August 2021- I met with the Deputy Director of Home Affairs Department together with representatives of the guesthouse industry. We reflected on the difficulties encountered by members of the guesthouse industry in applying for licence renewal after the newly revised "Hotel and Guesthouse Accommodation Ordinance" came into effect.

16 July 2021- In an interview with the Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), I raised the concern regarding the massive drop of hotel occupancy due to the Government's invocation of the place-specific flight suspension mechanism for the United Kingdom (UK), which prohibited all passenger flights from the UK to land in Hong Kong with effect on 1 July 2021. I urged the Government to increase the subsidies for quarantine hotels.

11 December 2020 - Convened a press conference with the FHKHO and members of the industry to explain how our members could implement the regulations on Government-designated quarantine hotels and the rate subsidy mechanism. Through our explanation, the public could better understand the relevant operational arrangements.

26 November 2020 - Hon. Vincent CHENG Wing-shun and I met with Dr Raymond SO Wai-man, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing to discuss the details of transforming guesthouses into transitional housing.
